Perfectly possible, Christine - it wouldn't be an unusual thing to do.

Christine

Christine Report 3 Aug 2018 11:56

Hi ArgyllGran yes the Amelia Brown could be my Grandmother as she is the right age but I still cannot find a marriage for her to a Richard James Burrows. I see that you have found my parents information about there marriage in 1939 and it says that his father is deceased because this is what he was told as a child in the children's home.
Is it possible that she just took his name without marrying him as this happened on my mothers side of the family and my maternal Great-Grandfather changed his name after he had been married for years and his children took this name as well.

Christine

Christine Report 3 Aug 2018 11:25

Hi I have the information from the childrens home that my father was placed in and have since been in touch with Teeside archives to see if they have any workhouse records for the years 1914/17 but unfortunately the records have been lost or destroyed so no joy there. It is well known that County Durham were not very good at keeping records up to date or even keeping records at all. It appears that my father lived in name only without any pedigree.

Christine ..........

did the man in Durham give you the name of the Childrens Home, and of the Workhouse that your father had been in?

It might be possible to find those records and see if they had any information.

Christine Report 31 Jul 2018 18:38

Hi everybody, My father was born on the 27th January 1914 at 15 Prince regent street,Stockton-on Tees. His mothers Maiden name was Brown and his father was a labourer. I have had a gentleman from Durham archives search for any information with regards to my father and his parents. He sent me information that my father entered a Childrens home in Stockton on the 10th August 1917 and left there in 1928. He arrived at the childrens home from the workhouse. I have searched every record possible to find a marriage or death for Richard and Amelia since 2004 but have drawn a blank. The only thing I have found was a death in 1924 in Manchester for a couple with the same name. I have come to the conclusion that they either abandon him or they used somebodies name and not there own.

rootgatherer Report 27 Jul 2018 16:30

I think the Bradford couple are not the poster's family. Amelia would have been a bit old to be having a child in 1914/15.

Their son couldn't be the father either as they have declared him deceased on the 1911 census.
