Not one of the missing children, but -

I noticed that in your opening post you don't give a death date for Martha 1885.

Probably took Mother's name because Mother not married when they were born. Unless the Father was at the Registration and admitted paternity they would be registered that way.

Could even be that John wasn't the Father of the first 2 but accepted them as his own.

I would think Prudence would be his as she was born after 1871 when they were already co-habiting and possibly Arthur who was registered Q1 1871

Erika, they married on the 4th September 1874 both down as single. So looks like they lived together, if so why did the children take the mother's surname. Looks like you found the 15th child Virgina b 1870. Great

So is she the 4th ' missing' child?

Apologies, rootgatherer - didn't mean to overlook your valuable contribution. Getting a bit bog-eyed now, what with this and the Maw thread!

greyghost Report 27 Jul 2018 17:29

ErikaH - can't take the credit for the 1891 census - that was rootgatherer and I admit to that leading me to the 1901

But that 1871 you've posted has Virginia aged 1. The birth we found previously was 1873 for Prudence Virginia so she couldn't have been on the 1871 census

Well, they lied in 1871 about being married...............I wonder if John had a wife elsewhere

Helina - have you found the family in 1891 or 1901 - or are you just going by the 1911 census and births found?

There may be children named on a census with no other record to be found for them

If Sarah was 64 in 1911 she would have been around 44 when she had William, so although still possible, perhaps unlike to have had children after him.

Look for gaps between other births when children births not yet found could have happened.

helina

Please delete the link - it messes up the page.

And it isn't necessary - I posted the 1911 census for all to see.

Stillborn births were not supposed to be included. And, yes, she was single when she married - her first two children were illegitimate

helina

helina Report 27 Jul 2018 16:06

Thank you for what you have found, so Sarah had 2 children before marriage, just out of interest Sarah was classed as single when she married in 1874. As already mentioned 2 could be stillborn (would their deaths/births be registered)
