Her family at least may not have known about it!

She was over 21, so wouldn't have had to get permission from anyone, and the vicar would believe whatever she told him!

And,James Race's family would believe what ever he told them .... after all he must have given his brother some story about why Hannah wasn't with him in 1881. She'd already left fro NZ, so he could just have said she'd died.
