I might be wrong to be suspicious about William being a widower at 18 in my earlier post.

Census 1851 has a William and Elizabeth:

1851 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Worlds End, Petworth, Sussex, England

William Hooker Head Married Male 72 1779 Pauper Carrier Stedham, Sussex, England
Elizabeth Hooker Wife Married Female 73 1778 - Northchapel, Sussex, England

The occupation of William on his son John's marriage to widow Jane Dalman is also 'Carrier'

RE the 1859 death, that William was aged 82

HOOKER, WILLIAM 82
GRO Reference: 1859 D Quarter in PETWORTH Volume 02B Page 177

so born c1777. That would make him aged 18 when he married Elizabeth Austen in 1795, which is feasible, however he was a widower at the time he married her, so that seems a bit unfortunate to have already lost a wife at that age.

Rather late baptism for John Hooker, showing parents as William and Elizabeth. Date of his birth is two weeks BEFORE his parents William Hooker and Elizabeth Austen married, so technically he was born an Austen.

Looks like AustinQ and safc are correct. Note the marriage of William and Elizabeth that safc posted also took place at St Mary's Petworth, where John is later baptised as a 6 yr old.

I'm sending for what I hope is his DC in Q.4 1859 - fingers crossed there may be some clues on the Certificate. Will post results on here.

The John Hooker of Fittleworth is, very confusingly to say the least, a cousin of 'my' John Hooker. Fittleworth and Stopham are close together.

Nicola'S

Nicola'S Report 3 Aug 2018 15:33

This man is my Great Great Great Grandfaher. His dob has been calculated as c.1796 from the various census records.

I know that his first wife was Lucy ?BOWERS? and that they had several children, all recorded.

Poor Lucy died shortly after the death of their last infant son.

John then remarried to a widow JANE DALMAN. All good so far.

However:-
1. My best efforts cannot find the marriage of John and Lucy which was PROBABLY in Stopham, Sussex. Their eldest child James Hooker was born c.1821 so that would be a guide for his parents' marriage?
2. John Hooker's father was William Hooker. I can't find any more information about either of his parents.
3. I can't unearth any details about the dob or parentage of his wife Lucy.

I do know various other details about John, i.e., that he was the Parish Clerk for 38 years and is buried at Stopham [sadly, no headstone]. I also know about the various offspring [Edmund, the youngest surviving child, is my Great Great Grandfather and one of my cousins has written a book about his siblings Charles and Henry], so I wouldn't want you to go chasing your valuable time down these lines of research!!

Any bright eyes out there, please? I'm stuck. :-|
THANK YOU.
