Find Ancestors

I am trying to find any information on John Price Roberts. He is my great grandfather. All I know is that he married my great grandmother, Louisa Dennett, on 18 June 1888. My grandmother was born 14 April 1889 and apparently Louisa went off with a Thomas Bavis - I know the story from then onwards. What I'm hoping to find is possibly what happened to JPR and possibly his birth. When JPR married Louisa they were both living at 30 Edmund Street, Liverpool (from marriage cert.). JPR's father was shown as Richard Roberts (deceased). When my grandmother was born in 1889 the address was shown as 185 Boundary Road, St. Helens.

The marriage above is the correct one - he married Louisa on 18 June 1888 - I have the certificate. On the marriage certificate he is shown as a mariner. On the birth certificate of my grandmother he is shown as a metal man at colliery. Louisa left John and went to live with Thomas Bavis. I have the story of Thomas and Louisa after they got together - though I can't find a marriage record for them - but what I can't find is any information on John Price Roberts.

John was 27 when he married, he was shown as a bachelor. His father was a miner. Witnesses were Hugh Jones and Elizabeth Hughes.
My grandmother stayed with mother, Louisa, and her sister Catherine was born in April 1891 at the Hibbert Street, Oldham, address. Catherine's father was shown as Thomas Bavis.
I wonder if the John Price Roberts born Sept 1863 in W. Derby would be him, since he lived in Liverpool when he married Louisa … don't know how we'd prove it though.

I do also wonder why we can't find him in the 1891, etc., census after Louisa left him. Definitely a strange one.
