The legal ages of 14 for boys and 12 for girls to marry with parental permission was apparently still in force right up to 1927 but very few took advantage of it.

Dea - no idea where the "law" came from but I remember it being talked about on Genes many years ago. I learn most things about genealogy from the very knowledgeable Genes members!!

You could google to find legal age of marriage at the time that marriage took place...............

at one time I think the legal age at which someone could get married with parental permission was 14 for boys and 12 for girls.

That would give you an a clearer idea of the age range that you would be looking at for her birth

OR see if you can find her on a census after her marriage ;-)

Well Kath, what can I say ???

That is one of those very probably 'totally useless' bits of information that I find totally fascinating !! - I will store it away and hope that someone asks a question which requires that information one day !! ;-) :-D :-D

I do find these little snippets quite fascinating though and just wonder where they gathered the criteria from which turned this situation into 'law'. It must have happened to someone quite 'important' who's parent's objected and her very influential 'beau' managed to twist someone's arm ??? ;-)

Thanks for the info.

Just for future information, if a minor marries and is then widowed and marries again before the age of 21 she does not need parental permission the second time.

Yes it would. Technically they should have been given permission by their parents.
