I haven't looked into him fully but there is LOADS of info to be found online.

He is:

Cecil Reginald Percival Bennett CBE
1896–1976

He appears to have had a very distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He has a CBE and I believe an OBE and his portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

I had them returning, although I never said anything, because I never found them leaving. I did wonder why they went back, but going back to drop off Ethel is a very good reason. I have Ethel marrying a Bennet is he wealthy?

The only reason I know where she was in 1947 is because on her uncles landing card he was going to a "Mrs. A. Brown, 365 Oakwood Ave, Toronto Canada. Frank and his father James landed in New York on their way to Canada. I also know he lived with them until his marriage in 1950, but Great Uncle Frank died three years ago so I can't ask him any questions :-(

Thank you, Dea, I had noticed that William's name was at the bottom of a page and Alice & Ethel at the top of another one and thought that they must have been together but after going to previous page and next page couldn't see it. Silly me, never thought to check page numbers.

Ahhah !! - They ARE travelling together and indeed listed together but the pages of the manifest have been photocopied and stapled together in the wrong order !!

William is at the bottom of page 3 and Alice + Ethel are at the top of page 4 - However, inbetween those two pages when you look at the records page 5 has been put in the wrong place so if you check the previous and next pages for the 'Brown's', you will not see them connected!

It would appear that Ethel stayed in England (where by the way, she married very well). I don't see William going over to England, he wasn't with Alice and Ethel when they went over earlier in the year.

I wonder if she had decided to stay in England as stated in the ships manifest for her travel to England and therefore he may have followed her over and persuaded her to return?? I suppose we will never know?

Could this possibly be Alice returning to Canada? She's with William Edwin Brown, a fitter. They are returning Canadians and say they have lived in Canada for 10 years, 1910-1920.

The interesting thing was that they were intending to remain permanently in England ???

You will note that Ethel has been mistranscribed as Ethel Bessie Dault but if you check the original it is certainly her.

Just to mention - it is posted above that Alice travelled to Canada on her own in 1911 - I presume that you are now aware that she actually travelled over accompanied by her niece Ethel Bessie Bartlett who was with them on 1911 census.

Also, I think the type of work column no.31 part 'could' say 'Ornamental work' - the word 'work being written above the 'ornamental' bit.

I had at first thought that there was a b or a t in the middle of the first word but if you look closely the long stroke we can see is actually a part of the enumerators initials written on top of it.

Armed with this info, I now believe that the first word of his occupation is 'bronze' which is a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper.

Although it ends in ge, I don't think its an 'Orange' Fitter. The handwriting is awful; you can't even make out the industry!
