I agree with Kucinta. Start with the marriage certificate. If you don't know the name of either parent it seems a little odd. If Eliza's parents had died before she came to England, it would seem a bit odd that she never mentioned them by name.

Who was her son named for please? Could it have been her father?

You should start with what you know is DEFINITE, in this case the marriage in 1957. This should give you the name and occupation of Eliza's father.

Then purchase the birth cert - if the father matches the one on the marriage cert, then it is likely to be correct, and you should then have the name and maiden name of her mother, and can start to look for their marriage, in order to work back.

The National Archives say this about the index cards they hold for the Land Army ( only the index cards survive, and not the full service records):

"Copies of alphabetical index cards (1939-1948)

Look through microfiche copies of index cards in MAF 421. The index cards can show name, address, date of birth, Women’s Land Army number and occasionally present occupation, where transferred to and when demobilised.

To access these records you will either need to visit us, pay for research (£) or, where you can identify a specific record reference, order a copy (£)."

Also:

"Original alphabetical index cards (1939-1950)

Contact the Imperial War Museum for a photocopy of an index card. The originals are not available for the public to view. They require the full name, date of birth, the address at the time of service, and the location of service if possible."

all info posted is the right person, as you see from the marriage she was Eliza , only her husband called her Elizabeth. She was always known as Lil by everyone else. Now do I buy the birth posted by Rootgatherer as its the right area. or the Marriage cert

The record Rootgatherer found for birth still looks your best bet, but you could cross reference it with the information on the marriage cert to see if it was right.

Please tell us all info from the marriage cert - do you have it?
If so, does it not name her father?

What was the name and occupation of her father on the marriage cert?

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 12 Oct 2018 14:07

yes she was married in 1957 in Cheshire. According to passed on family info she came from Ireland as a teenager after her parents deaths, and joined the land army. Don't know exact year but have to guess about 1940 ish

How did you work back to her please? Did she marry? If so, her marriage certificate will name her father if known.
