Possibly phthisis. : a progressively wasting or consumptive condition especially : pulmonary tuberculosis.

There is such a thing as abdominal TB, might be worth a google if you want to find out more.

As you say, a horrible death.

Have now received the death certificate. Emma died on the 5th February 1846 at St Peter's hospital, present at death was Mary Ann Richards who I have no record of. Cause of death, now I am only guessing the writing is dreadful. Plictisis?? 4 months ulceration. Intestines? 1 month certified. Sounds like a horrible death. On the 1841 census Emma's address is; Friars, St Paul Bristol. Emma Richards; buried - 11 Feb 1846; age - 16; burial place - St Paul, Portland Square, Bristol

So poor Emma died in 1846

Thank you for your assistance which was more then I expected. Philemon went to live in the USA in the 50's and son William possibly followed him,

George married and had 5 children.

The family were shoe makers/cordwainers.

Emma Rowles married Philemon Richards on the 23rd January 1825 at St Paul, Portland Square Bristol. I know nothing more about her when she was born or died inspite of searching. How many children they had I am not sure. They had 2 sons that I have found baptisms, and they may of had a daughter.

William born about 1826, baptised 27th Dec 1829 Bristol
George born about 1829,baptised as above. George married Eliza Lewis in 1846, obtained their marriage certificate naming Philemon Richards as the father.
?Emma born about 1831

Any information that could be found regarding the two Emma's I would appreciate, or any other children they may of had.
