Shipping record for ARAWA, departing England 1885

Just a thought Cherilyn...........

Looking at the actual article in the newspaper it lists after the couples and families ............ Misses Downey, Cormack and Forbes, Messrs. Thomas, Kelly, Bushe, Taylor......................... etc....

I have looked through all the passengers and I cannot find another Mr. Kelly OR a Mr. Thomas. I just wonder if they have somehow merged the names. There would still be a Mr. Kelly though but he may not be a 'Thomas' Kelly and he may well not have any connection at all.

Ooh so clever Dea, thank you!

Now I'm very curious about Thomas as he wasn't one of the children...this requires some investigation! :-)

Probably no passenger list here - just an advertisement for the ship:

EDIT:
Far too early, anyway, if your Kellys only set off in August.

Thanks Dea & Shirley.

No it is Rev John E. Kelly and his wife and 3 children. I'm not sure if they stopped at Australia before going to NZ (they later returned to SA).

At least I have the ship's name which is more than I had before (from Papers Past!)

This gives detail of the ship's journey but no passenger names I am afraid:

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP18851001.2.3.4

You can search on the above site and there are MANY mentions of the Arawa and of its passenger lists so you may find something there, though it means a long trawl.

Online travel info doesn't start till 1890 I,m afraid

Have you tried inward travel on the New Zealand records

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 19 Nov 2018 06:30

Have tried in vain to find a record of this ship or its passengers.

It departed London or Plymouth in August 1885 bound for New Zealand, via Cape Town and Australian ports.

Looking for the Kelly family on board. Thanks in anticipation
:-)
