Aaron Skuse

helina Report 3 Jan 2019 10:54

Aaron Skuse born 1825 Bristol, in 1866 he married Betsy Britton. Aaron died in in 1869 so was not married long. They had a son Samuel born 1868.

Now on the 1871 census Betsy is a widow living with her children Kingswood Gloucestershire. Yes I said children, Henry Skuse born 1851, George born 1856 and Mary Ann born 1863 as well as Samuel age 3.

Guess Betsy must of been married before and the 3 older children took on the surname Skuse. on the marriage translation Betsy's father was called George Britton, maybe Aaron and Betsy lived together before getting married?

Looked for a marriage thinking maybe Betsy reverted to for maiden surname with no luck. Looked for a birth reg for the 3 children with little luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, did wander if Aaron had married before as he was in his 40's when he married Betsy. Did come across that earlier marriage but on the 1851 or was it 1861 he was down as single. May of been looking at a wrong census. At the library so when home I'll do some more research.

Helina - your 1851 census had already been posted. It would have helped if you had posted it originally though, it gives helpers a picture of the family without having to hunt for them.

It looks as though she had the children without being married. The certificates to go with the possible birth registrations posted would tell you if Elizabeth / Betsy was the Mother to those children. As there is no Mother's maiden name listed, it looks as though no Father was recorded - so whether it was Aaron or someone else you may never know. And the births may not have been registered at all, there was no penalty for not doing so until the mid 1870's.
