There is the image of a baptism in 1821 in Ashton-under-Lyne in non-conformist baptisms of a Zedoniah Stanley (possibly an earlier ancestor of the family you are looking at) and the writing is beautiful and very clear indeed. She is the seventh daughter of Edward Stanley and Phoebe (nee Warmley).

I would think Zedoniah is possibly the correct spelling.

Thank you all, I believe Sidonia was one and the same as Zadoniath as the birth was the same year . As you say it is a very unusual name and could have easily been misheard depending on how they pronounced it.

It does look like Zacriah, age 11, on 1871 census.

But as you say - Sidonia/Zadoniah doesn't appear in 1871, and Zacriah only appears in 1871, so it looks like Zacriah is Sidonia.

I wouldn't have though the enumerator could mistake an 11-yr-old girl for a boy - but maybe she wasn't present during his visit to the house, and he misheard the unusual name Zadoniah.

Joseph had died in 1869 and I now believe it is a mis transcription of Zadoniath Malyon. Your opinions on this would be appreciated

He died in 1869 Erika. I am wondering if there is a mistake here as I have found a daughter born 1860 registered as Sidonia but then called Zadoniath. as she does not appear on 1871 I am wondering if it could be her name with the age completely wrong. I know she exists as she married in 1880 . A bit of an enigma :-|

Not convinced the age is 4 - could easily be 11

I am having loads of trouble making out a name on a census, can someone take a look for me please.

1871 census.. Mary Stanley born 1824,Mellor, Derbyshire now living Ashton under Lyne, Lancs. There is a son born 1867 but this is the name I cannot work out. I have tried searching on freebmd for anything that might be a match with no luck.

Thank you
