Elizabeth Ann Rodda is witness to Sarah's marriage but I still can't work out how Sarah can be an Aunt to James Henry....

Sarah had a brother who died when little plus Arabella (accounted for) and Elizabeth Ann........

Maybe it's just coincidental and it IS the wrong Sarah (the cert does not say Sarah Jane and it has her deceased father as a Farmer).

Marriage cert for Elizabeth Ann has deceased father as Miner....which is correct (Sarah could have made an error...)

It's been a while since I've bought certificates. I'll go for and update you all upon the results.

Thank you all again.

Catherine Report 22 Mar 2019 20:41

To be more certain you will probably have to buy the marriage certificate for the two girls to check name of father and see if he is noted as deceased, or not.
The certificates may also give names of witnesses that are family members, but it does come at a cost, so the decision is yours.
You could also look for a death to see if there is a date of birth noted, but there again you would need the birth certificates of both children to find out their exact date of births.
Unfortunately, either way, you will probably have to buy a couple of certificates to be sure.

Phillip Report 22 Mar 2019 19:49

Thank you for all your help. Are we plumping fir the Elizabeth who married Trevarthen and the Sarah who married Weeks?

There don't appear to be any brothers, at least not from 1837 onwards, so to find the uncle we'll have to find who the sisters married.

Yes. There were other children - just have to work out which uncle!! Rosamond's siblings were living in mid-Devon so must be one of the Rodda clan....?

Mary

Mary Report 21 Mar 2019 11:44

So the one she deserted was Arabella in July 1862 in the Workhouse and sent to her Uncle's in liskeard Aug 1862 at his request.

Phillip Report 21 Mar 2019 10:58

I have seen that Rosamond Rodda was in Truro on 10 May 1862 as she was charged with deserting her child (just the one..?) - one month hard labour.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 21 Mar 2019 10:51

Just a thought -

I wonder if James Henry could be a son of Elizabeth Ann?

If the 1881 census for Elizabeth, with the mystery brother William, is the correct one, she was living in Helston and didn't marry until 1887.

EDIT:
Aaaagh!
but on the other hand, if the Elizabeth in the 1891 census (housekeeper, born Camborne) is the correct one, then she's not the one who married Frederick Trevarthen in 1887 !

There are far too many Elizabeth Ann Roddas born approx. 1857..

For instance, there's this one, travelling alone, domestic servant, intending "protracted sojourn":

Eliz A Rodda
in the New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957
Name: Eliz A Rodda
Arrival Date: 15 Jun 1892
Birth Date: abt 1856
Age: 36
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: English
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Majestic

But maybe that's the return journey of this one, occupation Matron -
EDIT: no probably not the same one, unless she'd upped her occupation :

Elizabeth Ann Rodda
in the UK, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Elizabeth Ann Rodda
Arrival Age: 36
Birth Date: abt 1856
Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States
Arrival Date: 24 Apr 1892
Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Servia
Official Number: 84172

I think I need to lie down in a darkened room.

ADDED:

And I've just noticed, both journeys already posted by Catherine.

There were only two Sarah Roddas born in Redruth district 1860-63 - yours, and the one who went to the USA.

Phillip

Phillip Report 21 Mar 2019 09:51

Gradually.....we are inching our way. But it is odd how Rosamond/Rosamund/Rose/Rosie goes missing.

Where were they between the post workhouse and Elizabeth Ann's marriage?

With Elizabeth Ann marrying locally, it makes you think that they all stayed together? 1871 census is the key.

I'm afraid I feel that Sarah Dehaven is the Sarah Jane who went to USA in 1869 with parents William and Rosina :

This is her family in 1861 - interestingly the name Eustice crops up here:

This is James in 1881

Elizabeth Dehaven Wife F 43 Pennsylvania, United States
James Dehaven Son M 18 Pennsylvania, United States (Engineer)
Sarah Dehaven Daughter F 16 Pennsylvania, United States

Catherine. I'm not so sure because there were 2 Sarah Jane Roddas born at the same time. In one of the original posts, does it not give different parents?

Thank you for this fantastic research. I really do appreciate it.

Going back to 1881 census - I wasn't aware Elizabeth had a brother William H.

Elizabeth, Sarah Jane and mother Rosamond had been in the workhouse 2 years earlier.

Only William H. Rodda I can finx for 1864ish is with mmn of Eustice.

Nothing in 1871 census.
