I still wouldn't rule out the John born in Mountain Ash. Birth registered in correct quarter for an April 1901 birth. Right father's name. Father deceased before marriage. Pity certificates are so expensive to buy.

But it can't be the same Owen.

Susannah Newell married an Owen Reardon in 1894, but the Owen in Wales had married Elizabeth in 1892, and was still with her in 1911.

EDIT:
No, I was thinking that Susannah was your John's mother - but of course you don't know who her mother was, so the Newell/Reardon marriage may have nothing whatever to do with John.
