I am struggling to find what happened to Jane Butler born 1853 Rowston Lincolnshire. I have been unable to find anything after the 1861 census where she is in Rowston with her parents. She is the only one of 22 siblings and half-siblings that I have been unable to trace. Her father Michael died in 1865 and mother Mary married again in 1869 to one of her daughter-in-law's father - John Rush. They remained in Rowston, but Jane is not with them in 1871. Given that she would have been 18 she could have been working away from home - several sisters did so as house maids or dairy maids. The surname Butler does seem to get mis-transcribed on occasion , but my attempts to find her using variants haven't met with any success. I seem to have a bit of a blind spot using wildcards and my attempts with those haven't got very far either. Can anybody help? |

I don't think the death is a match, the family were based in Rowston for many years. There is perhaps an outside chance that she could have been a domestic servant at 13, but as Scampton isn't miles away from Rowston I would have expected her to be buried back at home. |

if mary is 56 in 1861 census looks like jane is her last child born |

If Jane died in Lincoln that wouldn't explain the burial at Scampton which is not connected with the family location. |

The 1851 census maylon posts is the mother Mary - interestingly husband Michael is listed living next door!? 1861 he is back under the same roof. Jane is indeed the youngest child, her mother was 41 when she was born, the last of 1 she had 1, 3 of whom were born before the couple married, for 2 of the 3 the baptisms register names Michael as the father! |

The death listed by Malyon is likely for this Jane Butler- on the burials the entry under Jane Butler is another Jane Butler aged 83- which also fits with this family: |

Scampton may not be far from Lincoln, but as a burial place it doesn't tie in when the family lived in Rowston. |

If you refer back to my post I have included the census details for the Butler family in Scampton. |
