Find Ancestors

I am researching my husband's Great Grandfather John Robert Emslie born in Scarborough in 1879 son of John and Mary Emslie. He married Eliza Mooring in 1899 and went on to have 3 children Ian, Margaret and Lawrence. The story in the family is that he went - without his family - to Canada where he died in 1921. We have a photograph that was sent back to England - we don't know by whom - of his gravestone. We do know that whilst in Canada he changed his Christian name to Ian and that he also joined the Caledonian Society. We do know that he was very proud of his Scottish heritage - his father was from Scotland. on the bottom of the gravestone it says "Aberdeen, Scotland".
I am keen to find out when he went to Canada and what he did there and whether he had another family there. We do know that the wife he left behind here remarried after his death in 1921.
I would be grateful for any information anyone can give or any pointers anyone can give as to how i can find out more. Many thanks in advance.

So daughter Margaret died June Qtr 1907 and daughter Amy was born same Qtr. (May)

It was a pretty quick romance if he then married in October.

Had he already gone and Amy not his?

The first three children were born 1899, 1900 and 1901 then there's a gap to 1907.

Or working away from home, popped back 1906 time and then disappeared again
