I'm looking to send for the birth certificate of Margaret Craig, but there's a discrepancy between the page number on the GRO site and freeBMD. The GRO site gives the page no. as 439 and free BMD as 459. How do I know which one is correct? I'm trying to find the maiden name of her mother.

I've just noticed on the GRO site that the mother's maiden name is given, hadn't seen that before, so I'm guessing the GRO site is the correct page no. I'll still send for the certificate as I need the date of birth too.

If the info transcribed is wrong, you should submit a correction

Look at the image to check

Have you looked at the entry on the image of the Index page on FreeBMD?
See for yourself what you think the page number is.

Click on the "pair of spectacles" symbol to the right of the record on FreeBMD, and then on "View the original".

It looks clearly like 459 to me. I've submittted a correction to GRO - don't know if they'll pay any attention to it or not!

Or you can email GRO, explain the difficulty to them, and ask which page number you should put in your order.

"Before you order a certificate

If you would like to ask us a question, or want to know more about one of our services before you order a certificate you can email us directly at [email protected]
If you do not wish to receive an autotext response please include GQ in the subject field of your email. We will respond to your email within 5 working days."

Thanks everyone. Yes, 459 is the correct one and thanks ArgyllGran for submitting the correction. Thanks also for that 'spectacles' symbol suggestion, I didn't know about that.

But bear in mind that as GRO have it transcribed as 439, that's what you might have to quote when ordering on their website.

If I were you, I would contact them and ask first.

Just received my pdf copy of the birth certificate for Margaret Craig - mother confirmed as Elizabeth Guest and the number was definitely 459.
Thanks.
