Unfortunately, John McDonald is a very common name, both in Scotland and in Ireland.

Add to that the patchiness of Irish records.

There are no baptisms of John McDonalds with father Daniel showing on irishgenealogy.ie.

There are bound to have been more with such a common name, whose baptism records have not survived.

"Ireland" is pretty vague, and not necessarily correct in any case. The 1841 enumerator might have just guessed from his non-English accent. He might have been Scottish after all!

We don't know how when he was born, either.
Age stated at death is only as accurate as what the informant believes to be true.
Although said to be 30 in 1846, he's said to be 20 in 1841, but could have been anything between 20 and 24 .
His marriage record in 1841 says he was of "full age" - which should mean at least 21.

I feel that I have hit a brick wall with this particular branch.

I have his marriage cert and death cert, both in Shropshire, but cannot find a reference on Ancestry to his birth. He died aged 30 on 2 Feb 1846 in Chelmarsh, Shropshire. So he was born in 1815 or 1816. He may have been born in Shropshire. Possibly in Scotland. Possibly elsewhere. He got married in Bridgnorth, Shropshire in 1841.

His father was Daniel MacDonald. profession listed as manufacturer on John's marriage cert, and born in Scotland.

Not sure how to progress this one.
