The only Haggarty/Skinner (or other spelling) I can see is the one in 1951.

Unfortunately I can't make out the date of the correction to the 1939 Register.

As Sophia's YOB is so wrong, perhaps her supposed marital status is too.
Maybe she considered herself single, if no longer living with her first husband.
Did they separate?
What does the marriage cert say about her marital status?

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 14:04

It says on the marr cert, she is a widow.

Sophia's mother told so many lies and she had Sophia in london ( unmarried) on 25 Oct 1877. She then returned to her hometown of Ramsgate and registered Sophia again saying she was born on 25 Dec 1877!!

I know her husband died before her and he was older than her but cant say if they divorced. Tbh, I think he died and maybe she considered herself single but she was actually a widow.

On her death cert it says" widow of...." and its left blank???

In that case, going by the day and month, Sophia's DOB stated in 1939 is correct, although not the year!

She was said to be 85 when she died - which wasn't correct either.

Alfred/Patrick's DOB may also be incorrect in 1939.

Have you investigated this death?

I have looked up Sophia's first husbands death and this is what i found.

B. Charles Edward Skinner 1869 d 1926 Medway Age 57
V 2A
P 825

But when I click on the burial details on FMP its says this
Edward Charles Skiinner
b. 1869 d.1926

Buried 20 May 1926.
Died at Medway Union( workhouse?)

Removed from St Marys( 7 Fairview Row)

Buried in Chatham & Maidstone Palmerston Cemetery.

This is where Sophia is buried!

So she was a widow from 1926 until she married again in 1951.

I wonder if its possible to view the headstone?

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 14:31

think I may have to order that death cert and see what details are on it, ie next of kin or informant etc. The download wont show that will it?

As far as I'm aware, a digital image will show all the usual info about the death, but just not things such as page headings, reg district, etc.

There's no image of Charles Skinner's gravestone on Findagrave.

On the Findagrave entry there's a link to "Request a photo".
I don't know if anyone responds to such requests or not, but it's worth a try!

I don’t know if you do this but when I find someone on Find a Grave I usually look at the other people with that surname buried in the same cemetery ( an option towards the right). Sometimes helps to fill in a few dates.

In 1921, ‘A’ Charles E Skinner was sharing a home with his sister, Jane, and saying he was SINGLE

Same in 1911.

Do you have 1911 census for Sophia?

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 17:15

No, in 1881 he was living at home with his parents Catherine Skinner b 1835 and his father Stephen John Skinner b 1826. They were a big family and not seeing a sister called jane.

They stayed at new Street West Ashford.

Charles was born in Middlesex according to that census and yob was 1866.

I spent hours over the years doing the family tree and never found Sophia and Charles in 1911. . I think they moved about a lot and were in and out of the work houses.

I shall order the death certs and get back to you all

Thanks again

What happened to Sophia’s daughter Clara?

https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Medway/

This is a very good website for workhouses/unions. It also includes date lists of what records are available at Medway

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 19:21

Clara was born in Jan 1901 and died a few months later.

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 19:43

For some reason, when she died later in 1901, she was registered as Clara Syrett which was her mothers married name Hannah Syrett ???

Florence, I am only a few miles from Palmerston Cemetery, I can have a look there for you and take a photo of the headstones - assuming I can find them of course. The cemetery is huge, in 2 parts as well, I have found a location for Edward Charles Skinner (F,298) but I have no idea where that is.

What makes you say Sophia is also buried there, I can't find a record of a grave for her. I can look for her as well, but really need a location or we are talking needles and haystacks. Maybe it's yet another mis-spelling - do you know how her surname is spelt on the headstone?

I don't think I'll get there this week, but hopefully next week.

As Alfred/Patrick is not the man born in Gibraltar, of course that means that William Haggerty and his wife Clara Appleton , researched at the start of your thread, aren't part of your tree either.
I assume lots of deletions/corrections to keep you busy, Florence!

Re Clara 1901 -
I'm confused. ErikaH called her Sophia's daughter, but your reply seems to imply she was the child of Sophia's sister Hannah.
Hannah married in the months between Clara's birth and death, which would account for the different surnames.
Do you have the birth or death certs?

Re graves -
Edward Charles Skinner was buried in Chatham Maidstone Road Cemetery - not Palmerston Road.

I don't see anything online to indicate where Sophia was buried.

agingrocker Report 22 May 2024 09:48

Thank you Argyllgran, but they are the same cemetery. Maidstone Road is the main entrance, Palmerston Road is the alternative entrance, plus the cemetery has another large chunk opposite on the other side of Palmerston Road

ErikaH Report 22 May 2024 10:19

I assumed - perhaps erroneously - that Clara was Sophia’s daughter as they were together on 1901 census, but, as the child died in infancy I guess it isn’t a major issue
