Thanks this information is so interesting. All I knew about him was that he had gone to Canada. Once there I couldn't find anything out about him.

One or two extra bits of info from Harold's side.

Google will bring up pictures / newspaper articles of Grenfell Apartments - first took residents November 1939

Marriage posted at 18:02 - Ethel's side of it.

I imagine it helped an immigration application if one said one was going to be a farmer.

Thanks for putting me straight on the 1831 re Harold being divorced. He left it quite late to get married. He would have been aged 36yrs in 1940.

Thanks ArgyllGran

That means his first marriage was also in Canada.

1927 - So he was a carpenter, intending to be a farmer. He seems to be changing his job quite often. I wonder if he ever did farming.
1931 He was a soldier. I wonder what made him decide to be a soldier.

Re 1931 Census - although the transcription says Harold was divorced, on the actual document I think it says he was single.

There's a mark across the S which makes it look like a D.

Re Osborne Barracks, where he was in 1931:

Just a slight possibility -

Ethel MAY have died 25 Sept 1970 - if she reverted to her maiden name, and the informant got her age wrong !!:

3 trees on Ancestry which have him in - none give a marriage date.

The Chorley family tree, held by a Jane Richards says that he died 7 August 1972 Tofino, Alberta-Clayoquat Regional District, British Columbia and was buried there.

Only 1 names Ethel but no death shown for her.
