If Jasper was in the Forces, he wouldn’t have been ‘unemployed’ in 1940/41, unless he’d been discharged…………..

Can’t positively identify George S after 1919 (school record)

greyghost Report 21 Jul 2024 16:11

Jasper W Read married Avril Jeanes 1939 Medway RD. Only that one surname combination married post 1920 so - possible child 1942 Kidderminster, another 1944 Chatham RD

Not the man fined for neglecting to send his children to school.

Your Jasper could have been in the Forces already so not recorded on the 1939

If the man in the newspaper article had fathered 6 children by 1941 - at least three of whom were of school age - some of the family should be on 1939 register.

ErikaH Report 21 Jul 2024 15:41

There was another Jasper Read of a similar age in Kent………………although he was an aeronautical draughtsman in 1939, and unlikely to be one in the newspaper article

37 Mill Street was unoccupied in 1939

ADDED

Info about ‘other’ JR as per now edited post by greyghost. Tks - I can’t C&P at the moment

I note that this seems to be connected to the very lengthy thread about Haggerty who married a Skinner at some stage

Very unlikely as he would have only been c25 years old, but trying to find another Jasper Read in area.

EDIT - There is s a Jasper W Read in Gillingham on the 1939 register (born 1906 on transcript, 1912 on original!) an aeronautical draughtsman who appears with wife Avril only. Will leave for elimination.

Sheerness Times 2 May 1941 - ??????

Parents fined at Sittingbourne for neglecting to send their children to school included -

Jasper Read of 37 Mill Street, Sittingbourne (who has been fined twice previously for similar neglect) was fined £1 in respect of his son George.

Sheerness Times 29 June 1940 - Jasper Read of Mill Street, Milton Regis summoned
Reason as above. 36 attendances our of 98. His 2 girls hadn't attended since 8th April. Warned previously, said couldn't afford shoes. Had 6 children and unemployed. Fined 5/-

Where was his mother in 1939?

He is a ‘visitor’ in 1921 because relationships for ALL people on censuses are to the HEAD of the household, if annotated correctly.

I presume you’ve checked CWGC?

Don't worry about the length of time between birth and registration. 6 weeks are allowed in which to register post birth so "made it" (but only just!)

One is allowed 6 weeks in which to register a birth.

Ok folks, gold star to anyone who can find out what happed to
Jasper Read b 1914 Elham Kent

Mother May Syrett b 1889-93( it changes frequently!)
Father Samuel Read.

They were living in Folkstone, Radnor St at the time of birth. The mother called her self Miriam Read formerly Syrett. Jasper was born on the 26 Mar 1914 but not registered until 6th may 1914 which is a long time.

However i cannot trace any marriage between these 2.Ii have the birth cert so the dates etc are as per that.

I found him quite by chance on the 1921 census and he is living with

Charles Skinner
Sofa(Sophia)
Charles Skinner son b 1902
Henry Skinner( this is not correct but not relevant)
Bert Evans b 1890
May Evans b 1891( formerly Syrett)
Jasper Read b1914 visitor( but actually May's son before she married Bert)

I also found his school register info up and until 1927 until it says he left the district which was Headcorn, Ashford at the time.

Now its only Jasper I need the info on not the rest of this disjointed family!!

So after he left school in 1927 around aged 13, i have searched and searched but cannot find a marriage or a death or anything. Its as if he vanished into thin air!

Anyone fancy a challenge please?

Florence in the hebrides

EDit: Forgot to add that May Evans remarried in 1933 to Bertie Edward Taylor. Think it says Horton, Kent but not an easy read on the marr cert,
