If the family above in 1921 is correct, there is a fairly comprehensive tree on Ancestry, which gives this as his death............

Deaths 1993 (>99%)
WILSON WILLIAM 31JY1918 COCKERMOUTH 3762 258

Does the grandson know when his grandfather died.......and where?

‘Just what his grandson thought’ - I expect many of us have found those family stories to be wrong ;-)

Mary Jane married James Hodgson in 1939, and they're in Workington on 1939 Register.

If William was already in the services he would not appear on the 1939 register.

Pauline -
you say "The Messenger was married to someone else".

Which Messenger do you mean? Which "someone else"?

Marriages Dec 1914 (>99%)
Messenger Sarah Wilson Cockermouth 10b 1285
Wilson David Messenger Cockermouth 10b 1285

Marriages Mar 1916 (>99%)
Messenger Margaret E Wilson Cockermouth 10b 1047
Wilson John Messenger Cockermouth 10b 1047

FreeBMD suggests that the page number for the 1916 marriage isn't what would be expected for Cockermouth - though it's what the Index image shows.

Ancestry suggests this might be the death of David Wilson from 1914 marriage:

David Wilson
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
Name David Wilson
Death Age 35
Birth Date abt 1891
Registration Date Jan 1926 [Feb 1926] [Mar 1926]
Registration Quarter Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration district Cockermouth
Inferred County Cumberland
Volume 10b
Page 758

In 1921, David is in Workington, with wife Sarah, Mary Jane 1916, and William 1918.

There is one of the name and age on 1921 in Workington.

Father David, mother Sarah, but David was a Coal Miner

Get his birth certificate - if you are 100% certain that he was born in 1918

Pauline

Pauline Report 26 Dec 2024 10:12

I could not not find him in 39

Pauline

Just what his Grandson thought
The Messenger was married to someone else

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 26 Dec 2024 10:07

He didn’t marry until 1943, so where was he in 1939?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 26 Dec 2024 09:59

How do you know his father was a farmer?

nameslessone Report 26 Dec 2024 09:15

So 3, not 103 ;-)

Check for his mother’s surname on freebmd or the GRO. Then look for a possible marriage.

Added: from freebmd - mothers mmn was Messenger.

Unfortunably there are two possible Wilson/Messenger marriages in Cockermouth
