My grandfather, Ralph Valentine, states he was born in Sydney, Australia, but there is no trace of him in the records. His father is named as Wilfred, a butcher and his mother, Mary Bennett. The family name has been altered from VALLINTINE to VALENTINE. I have been unable to find any mention of his parent's death in the records. I am told he was born on the 6th September 1863 and I am inclined to think his family came from Kent. He spent some time aboard the Vernon Nautical School for boys (Sydney Harbour, Aust.), a child welfare establishment for destitute or delinquent boys. If there is anybody out there who has a clue to his background, I would be delighted to hear from you. Up to his marriage he is a mystery.
