The Bestford family tree is coming along very nicely with almost all of the Bestfords living in the North East during the 1800's now traced. There are still some gaps however and a few mysteries to solve. I've confirmed at least one family moving to the USA and managed to trace a line from them to the C20th. However there was a Thomas Bestford on the boat travelling with them. I'm guessing that he was a relative but can find no record of him in the census records. He's listed as being about 27 years old in 1867. Also I have a record for a Thomas Bestford fighting for the Union during the American Civil War. Maybe it's the same person and the reason he doesn't appear in any census is that he was actually born in the USA and a previous generation moved over there? Records show however that he is listed as born in England so I'm not sure. Also the boat record appears to be misleading as the family names don't match with the UK 1861 census record and the US 1870 census record (although the UK and US records do match confirming it was this family that emigrated in 1867). I have scanned copies of the census records and the boat passenger records if needed. Regards Mark Bestford (edit - I now have a site dedicated to researching the Bestford family name. You can find it at www.bestford.org )

Hi Mark, I have a big Bestford mystery you may be able to help me with. I married Stephen Bestford (1968-1998) in 1988 but found his family tree to be hushed up, which of course has made me interested. His father Peter Bestford had a sister Rosemary who died age six in the Chichester area they would have been born in the 1940's. Stephens Grand father Thomas is the big hushed up mystery... not spoken about. I found out he and his wife Win married at Noughton leap... where ever that is and they lived in Birdham near Chichester. I believe Thomas fought in the war and was based at Guildford but have no evidence. I have tried to access your web site but could not.
If any of this makes sense to you or if you have any information regarding this line of the Bestford's I would be very glad to hear from you.
Kind regards,
Carla Bestford.
