In my family, there are 2 stories about the origin of the name Gilsenan. Story 1 Gil, in gealic translates along the lines of son or servant. Making a Gilsenan a son of (a follower, even) or servant of Saint Senan. Story 2 A Gil is a corruption or shortening of the name Gillie or game warden and Senan is a corruption of the name Shannon (as in the river of the same name). A person of the name Gilsenan, was a descentant of a band of game wardens turned pirates who sailed up and down the River Shannon earning their keep. When I was a child and pios, I loved to identify with story one, however, when I was a rebelious teenager, story 2 was my idle. I'm still a story 2 person :-) Tessa Gilsenan (b. 1953) |
