Hi emma,Yes the Astley's are rather confusing in Blackburn. My branch came from kendal but there seems to be two familys in Highgate kendal and they went to Blackburn, lots of names the same but dates of birth differant. I am looking for the father of Thomas Walmsley Astley and his sister Alice Astley and I think their father was William or Thomas born 1794 his wife was Sarah born 1794 Kendal a confectioner, are we looking at the same branch. best regards Michael Green

Am researching my Astley line that came from the Blackburn area - they seem to have been mostly weavers or involved in the cotton industry, trying to untangle all the lines is somewhat confusing and don't have much but am happy to share what I do. The earliest I have is William Astley b c1790 and he was a school master. One of his sons appears to have done the census in their village and so far as I can tell he separated from his wife - or she was always visiting children at the time of census returns! She was called Ann and was living with her son, David, at the time of her death. He ran a pub and was married to Alice Parker, father Robert. Their daughter, Elizabeth Alice was my g g grandmother - there was another Elizabeth Alice born very near by within months and possibly a cousin. Elizabeth had an older brother Joseph and a sister. David was one of 5, so far as I can tell, Christopher and William being two of his siblings. I believe this William married Catherine Yeatley though it may be the wrong William - the other Elizabeth Alice was their daughter. Catherine was illegitmate according to her birth certificate (or at least the father was blank). Anyone got any links to this branch? Emma
