The family name Punchard originated in the French village of Pontchardon (Normandy). Our ancestors came over as 'knights' or soldiers of William the conqueror and were involved in the battle of Hastings in 1066. Indeed receiving battle honours and subsequently lands as payment for sevices to William. The name Pontchardon appears on the role of battle honours of which a copy my father has. My father, a historian, has done loads of research into the history of this family. I have a document entitled 'Punchard the history of an unfortunte family' in my possesion. I believe other names have descended from the original some being, Punch, Puncher. |
