Belatedly, I`m getting round to reading posts. There may be no connection at all, but my great-g`father Owen Lynch married Mary Foley in Portobello (now part of Edinburgh) in 1859. Some work done by a cousin of mine suggests that she was born in Edinburgh - in the 1830s I would imagine, but her birth pre-dates statutory registration, and the only Mary Foley I can find locally is in the 1851 census; she was 13 at that time and lived with her widowed mother and younger sister at 27 Clerk St., which is in central Edinburgh. All are shown as born in Ireland. (They had 2 lodgers and a servant!) The dates don`t seem to fit with yours, but the location is about right and there may have been other Foleys in the area. Owen Lynch and Mary lived in Portobello, where he was a potter.
I haven`t got any further than this. The relevant statutory registers for Scotland are now online, but trying to dig out info from Ireland is a nightmare.

Hi All.. I am trying to trace my Foley connection in the Cannongate area of Edinburgh - which is City Centre (Old Town) My GG Grandfather - Owen FOLEY b abt 1826 Ireland. m Elizabeth FOLEY (ms TOOLE) in Ireland. (Elizabeths Mother was a Gilchrist) And her Father was Darby Toole - occ Tailor. Children of Owen and Elizabeth FOLEY Bartholomew - b abt 1853/54 - Ireland/Edinburgh? 1861 Census states Edinburgh - but no record of Bartholomews Birth in Edin. Mary FOLEY b abt 1855 Edinburgh (or perhaps Perth?) Ann/e FOLEY ( My G Grandmother) b Nov.29th 1859.Edinburgh Miles FOLEY b 17th Feb 1862 Edinburgh John FOLEY b 21st Sept. 1863 Edinburgh Eliz. FOLEY b 10th Oct. 1869 Edinburgh (died at 3 weeks old) There may be more children? Ann/e (aka Annie FOLEY) married William RUTHERFORD 1882 Edinburgh Scotland. Anyone recognise these people?
