The MITFORD's and various variant surnames such as MIDFORD, MEDFORD, METFORD, METFORTHE etc [I only have 80 variants so far] originate from the village of that name here in the Northumberland, in the North-east of England. There ancestors were part Norman [The BERTRAM's / BERTRAND's of Briquebec, Normandy, France], and part Saxon if local folklore is to be believed. I have been carrying out a massive one-name study of them, and am always happy to hear from anyone who can enhance this research or requires help with their own work. I can easily be contacted on my surname @btinternet.com Fiona Mitford a sixteenth generation descendant of the MITFORD of Seghill Branch.
