Hello Joyce

Just found your message about the Greenhalgh family of Tottington. We have a copy of the book written by Joseph Dodson Greenhalgh and also a book about Frederick Greenhalge/gh who became Goveror of Massachusetts in 1880's. We have managed to trace our Greenhalgh line back to 1690 to a Thomas Greenhalgh in Preston but so far cannot find where he came from before this but we still hope to find him.

The Greenhalghs of Brandlesholme were hereditary wardens of the forest of Tottington, and minor Lancashire gentry - hangers -on of the great Stanleys in the 17th century. A 19th century history of the family by Joseph Dodson Greenhalgh is very disappointing and dull, but includes an illustration of a portrait of one of the earlier Greenhalghs. The author says that there is a strong family resmblance in many of the Greenhalghs of his day, and I smiled tolerantly at this till I turned the page, saw the picture, and realised that I might have been looking at my 2xgt grandfather Richard Greenhalgh, a 19th century bleachworker, of whom I have an early photograph. A Roger Greenhalgh was warden of Sherwood Forest in the 16th century.
