The Scottish surname McIntosh is an anglicization of the Gaelic Mac an toisch, "toisch" being from the Old Gaelic and meaning "chief, leader". There are two MacIntosh septs, in Perthshire and Inverness, and each is decended from different toschachs. The most important of these was descended from Hugh, son of " Good John of Islay", to whom a charter of thanage was granted by Robert the Steward, Lord of Atholl, in 1345. The name is thereafter prominent in all the annuals of Scottish History. In 1382, for example, the king summoned Farchard Mctoschy to his presence to exact from him a promise not to persecute the Bishop of Aberdeen and his men! In 1390 William, earl of Errol, is described in records as Alexander Mackintoche, thane of Rathamurchus, and in 1528 James V issued a mandate to the earl of Moray and the sheriffs of the bordering counties to leave," na creatur levand of that clann McIntosh except priests, wemen, and barnis", but the women and children were to be driven to the coast for transportation to the shores of America. In the last of the clan's successive rallies for Prince Charles, it was in fact raised by Lady Macintosh, despite the neutrality of her husband, the Chief. They were the first to charge at Culloden. Blazon of arms: Quarterly; first or lion rampant gules; second ; argent a dexter hand fesseways couped at the wrist and holding a human heart gules; third; azure a boar's head couped or; fourth or a lyphad her oars in saltire sable. Translation : The lion is an emblem of strength, majesty & courage. The hand in heraldry is pledge of faith sincerity & courage. The boar symbolizes ferocity & a powerful defender, and the lymphad betokens venture. Crest : A cat-a-mountain salient gardant proper. Translation : This animal signifies Liberty, Vigilance & Courage Motto : Touch not the cat but a glove.
