John CAVENETT bapt. c. 1808 where??? On the NW coast of Devon, John CAVENETT/CAVINETT/CAVNET married Eliza SLUMAN of nearby Westleigh at Instow in 1828. They had 6 children, two of whom died young. John was`an agricultural labourer, who embarked with his`wife Eliza, son Henry b.1829, daughters Mary Ann and Eliza and son John b. 1838 on the 'Brightman' in 1840 for South Australia. During the voyage his wife Eliza died, as did their daughter Mary Ann `and they were buried at sea.. Thus John arrived a` widower in the young colonny of South Aust. with 3 young children. He married Eliza WAER within the year at Holy Trinity Church, North Tce Adelaide, and they had a daughter Mary Ann (who also dird young) Eliza was pregnant with another, when in Dec. 1844 John died from an apopleptic fit (stroke) when en route to Gawler on a waggon with supplies. The widowed Eliza gave birth to a posthumous daughter Elizabeth Eliza later married Adam TURPIN in Holy Trinity Church, North Tce. Adelaide. The name` CAVENETT (and`variants) is extremly rare and unusual. John's bapt/origins c. 1808 have long been sought diligently, but without success.Any mention of the surname prior to 1820 is greatly appreciated. In 1970 I published a slim volume entitled 'The CAVENETT Family in Australia 1840-1970'. A copy was donated to the Devon Record Offic, and the Library of the Society of Genealogists, London.
