My grandfather's first wife was known as Emma Jane Rayner as a child, but was born Emma Jane Purple 20 Mar 1862. Her mother Mary Ann Purple (b. 09 Mar 1842) married Henry Rayner (b. 22 Oct 1841) on 12 Nov 1864. All events Longham. She appears in the 1871 and 1881 censuses and on her marriage certificate as Emma Jane Rayner. She married John Place in Santon Downham, Suffolk, 29 Sep 1887. She had four children, of whom two died in infancy, and died herself in Elveden, Suffolk, 29 Jul 1896. The surviving two, a boy and girl, went on to have families.
