Trying to find Gowland

Joseph Gowland(Joe), born 1916 in the frosterley/stanhope area. Father unknown and mother died very young, i am 'told' Joseph was adopted and the Gowland name 'may/or may not' be from his adopted parents? He married Margaret Loughran and lived in Middlesrbough until 1991 when he sadley died. From old stories we remember, Joe used to say he was brought up by 'aunt/aunts' but we cant be sure if these people were relatives or friends of the family, nor can we be sure he 'was' adopted at the moment, but if you know of anyone who adopted or 'took in' a child named Joseph born in this area in this year i would really appreciate any information you could give me.
