Trying to find Eden

hi Leslie B,

I'm just being nosey, really, because my Edens come from Birmingham, but you know how it is, when you've looked at your own for so long that you long to look at some new ones....

Well, I looked up your Hannah Eden on Ancestry, and the nearest is on the FBMDbirth 1868q1 Northleach, Glos 6a 362. This would make her 3 on the next Census, 1871.

First Eden to turn up was James Eden, b 1868 in Glos, Compton Abdale, on the Census 1891 as a Grocer's porter, aged 23, This was not the right person, but it showed the Eden family in the right area.

The 1st Hannah Eden to turn up was a daughter, age 5, in Cen1851 in Northleach, Glos. Too old,, but her mother Mary A Eden kept a boarding house with a lodger, John Newell, 15, born in Canada. Interesting.

Cen 1861 George Eden, Mary Ann Eden and daughters keep a boardinghouse in High St Northleach.-same family.

Cen 1841 Hannah Eden 55 is in the Alms House, Northleach.

Then I looked for James' family in Cen 1871 and found him with father Thomas,34, born Comp Ab and mother Elizabeth, 35, b Northleach with 3 sis and 2 bros and James, all born in CA except Mum.

This still didn't find Hannah, so I went through page by page (only 13!)

Page 4 James Eden , head, mar, Ag Lab, b C A,
Jane Eden, wife, 62, b Liddington,
Alice A Eden, 32 , Dressmake, b CA.

Page8 Charles Eden, h, m, 27, (1844) Ag Lab b C A,
Sarah Eaden (sic) W, M, 24 (1847) Glos, Sevenhampton.
Anne Eaden dau, 3 b C A.
Emma Eaden dau, 1 b C A.

So that is Hannah on the Birth Cert being known as Anne, and note the transcription error that makes them 'Eadens'

Then the Marriage? see FBMDmarriage:
Charles Eden 1867 Q2 Northleach, Glos 6a 629 to Sarah Hamblin or Hambling.

I could find no record of a marriage in Sheffield or Yorkshire.

I hope that gets you going. This search for ancestors is really a big detective story, and it leads you all over the place with false names, transcription errors, phonetic spellings and all manner of false trails.

You could probably find more info on the IGI (International Genealogical Index) for Baptisms, marriages pre 1837, and on the FFHS site for burials, etc.

I wish you luck in your searches, we may eventually find a common ancestor!

Regards, John.

I am seeking any information on Charles Eden born between 1840-50? I think in England. He married a Sarah Hamblin born 1847? I am putting them both from 20 years of age on when married. They had a daughter Hannah born 1868 Compton Abdale, Gloucestershire, England. She came to Australia and married Hugh Prosser in 1894. The only bit I have is at the time of his daughters marriage he was a farmer.. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks Leslie
