Trying to find McKay

General Report 13 Mar 2007 02:55

Hi My name is Ian McKay, of Liverpool: my father was Bernard William Nelson McKay, my grandfather was Archibald Nelson McKay, my g/grandfather was James Archibald McKay, my g/g/grandfather was William McKay (In the 1871 census, he is 54 yrs old, and Born Scotland) On Williams marriage cert, 13th July 1849, his father's name is listed as Robert MacKay. However, as William was born in Scotland, in 1817 I was forced to look further North than Liverpool, to look for his place, and date, of birth. I am trying to find my g/g/grandfather Williams' d.o.b, and have discovered that a William McKay was born on 4th December , christened 23rd December 1817, in Reay, Caithness, to a Robert MacKay and a Janet Davidson. It was not uncommon for Scots to drop the letter 'a' from their name, once they moved South. I know it's a long shot, but can anyone suggest a way of my finding Williams' d.o.b. to see if I can find a match? (or otherwise !) Best Ian McKay

Malcolm

H Ian, I can't find any connection with the McKay side of my family.
There are two sites you can try;
1) Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

2) www.anesfhs.org.uk

Best of luck
Malcolm
