I have the same query as Eric here. I couldn't find a marriage for a Hannah Atkinson 1853, are you sure the Hannah Atchison on the record Eric has posted is definitely your Hannah Atkinson?

on the wedding certificate it says JARROW as address on thomas and hannah

thomas fletcher father John pitman also

can not find them in 1841 either

she is born in gosforth and the 1851 ( sorry 1851 not 1841 typo)


she was born in gosforth and niece to the Balks family working as servant

every census she is from gosforth, but can not find any parish reg with her there

This, presumably, is the marriage to which you refer.........

What leads you to think that Hannah Atkinson in 1851 is the same person as the one above?

Can't find her on 1841 census. Where did Thomas Fletcher and Hannah marry ? Quite often the marriage took place in the parish the bride was from -that may help

have her wedding certificate just father Thomas pitman

no witness with names of either family


she maried Thomas Fletcher who in the census is from Jarrow b. 1832 but i can not find him either
before 1861 census he was miner also

If you're sure about the details of Hannah's marriage, I think Eric's right, your best bet would be to order her marriage cert to get her parents details.

Have you tried looking for the pre-1837 marriages on the IGI?

It might have helped if you'd told us before what Hannah's father's name was!!

The family are listed on the 1861 and 1871 census as living in Backworth, Northumberland. Haven't found them in 1881 yet, although in 1871 all the children have left home, so you may find them listed with family elsewhere.
