Trying to find Hassan

Western Ireland, particulary Donegal, has lots of Hassan's. I was told by my parish priest, who was from the North West of Ireland, that it originates from middle-eastern farmers who settled there in the 17th century to farm the land. The potato was a staple of Irish farming and was introduced to Ireland from the Mediterranean region a century earlier .

Many of these people moved around the country, either following the work or fleeing hostility. This is the origin of the term "gypsies" - Egyptians.

We are trying to find out where the Hassan name originated. We have traced our tree back to the early 1800's but cannot get any further. We believe they came from Ireland around this time but we do not know where abouts in Ireland... If anyone has any info please let us know. Thanks Maria/ Laura
