Trying to find Gardner

My grandfather, Joseph Herbert GARDNER, was born c1888 in Stepney, the son of Fred GARDNER (b c1855, Maidstone), a tailor's cutter and Eliza (b c1857, Stepney). Fred was said to have been disinherited for marrying beneath himself and we have always been told that somewhere in Fred's maternal ancestry there was a Lord Mayor of London, called Lord Todd. I cannot find this name in the list of Lord Mayors and the only Lord Todd I can find appears to have no connection with the Gardners. The family owned land in the East End which was 'stolen' from them by Taylor Walker's brewery (allegedly). Joseph's siblings were Ada, Frederick, William, Richard and George. Has anyone any further information?
