I don't know whether this helps but in 1758 a member of the Pendleton, Manchester Royle family was also known as Edward Ryalls.

I believe that I am related to the well known first Anglican Bishop of Liverpool JC Ryle. I read once in a magazine at the dentists that the name Royle used to be Ryle and that an 'o' was added perhaps in the 1800's. As my branch of the family came from that general area it seems feasible. Does anyone know anything about it?
