For anyone trying to find that 1871 record on Ancestry - his name's transcribed as Shiel.

I agree that the birthplace says Prussia.

Thomas in 1871 - although the transcription has his place of birth as Russia, Germany, there is no mention of Germany as such on the original. I believe it says Prussia which is perhaps where the Germany comes from though -

Wikipedia - Prussia was a German state located on most of the North European Plain, also occupying southern and eastern regions. It formed the German Empire when it united the German states in 1871.

Many library services in the UK have free access to Ancestry and/or sometimes FMP

Ah thanks everyone for being so speedy! So Thomas' father was also Thomas. I don't have access to any paid things right now, but someone is going to delve a bit more.

I think the Ernest b 1819 may be related some way to Thomas the Elder.

As you are probably aware you have added to a very old thread. Click on Anita's name and you can send her a pm.
As long as she has kept the same email address Genes will notify her.

If you look at Search/search all members trees you will find a Thiels in a number of trees. Some of whom were born in Germany & Poland. You are the only person to have Ernest 1819 in their tree.

Hi Anita

Have you had any feedback on this? I am just back on research and trying to find out information prior to his birth in Prussia.

I have a note that his father could be Ernst Thiel b. 1819, Southern Germany.

best wishes
Pauline
