Trying to find Manion

Mannion/Manion: Stockton area. Are there any members of the Mannion family from Stockton who have more information on this family? My grt grandfather was Michael Mannion (or Manion), born 1851 - probably in Galway, who came from Ireland to work in the steelworks on Teesside. He married Margaret Gordon in 1882, at St. Mary's in Stockton. They had nine children - eight boys - so lots of Mannions out there I know. My grandfather was his son Jack (John) Mannion. On the 1881 census for Stockton Michael is recorded as Michael Manion - this seems to have been the spelling until the early 1900s when it appears to have changed to Mannion. I don't know how important the spelling is in order to trace family history. I have a copy of my grt grandparents' marriage certificate. It seems Michael was illiterate as his signature is X - the mark of Michael Manion. So I guess he didn't actually know how to spell his name. We also know his father was named Patrick. Any clues or help out there? Currently I know of two other family members who have done some research but none of us has managed to get further back than Michael. Catherine Payne (nee Mannion)
