Can anyone tell me please if it is possible to buy a marriage certificate for 1778 ?, if so do you know how much information it contains ?, Thanks if you can help Lulli x

If we're talking about England, they didn't exist before 1837 - parish records only before this date. Angela

There are no certificates before July 1837 when registration began. You could get a copy of the parish record, which would probably give you the couple's names, ages (might just say full age or minor) the parish where they lived, and groom's occupation (maybe). Also witnesses names. Kath. x

No, sorry, certificates did not start till 1837. Before then, you can get a photocopy of the church register. What it will contain varies from place to place, but will usually give as minimum, both names and marital status. You can sometimes get more information by tracking the Banns Books, but these are not always easy to find. OC
