Ian, freebmd is as it suggests - free - for checking births, marriages and deaths. But to be sure your information is correct you have to buy certificates. The childrens birth cert would have given the mothers maiden name and the address they were born plus their father and his occupation. Once you have both parents names you can then search for their marriage, buy that cert and find out the previous generation - i.e. both fathers of the couple and their occupations. You can also check the IGI on familysearch.org - free and Norfolk Transcription archives, free and the up and coming freereg site.
