Can anyone in Australia let me know if in about 1916-1917 Irish immigrants would have had be naturalised? I have a family that migrated to Australia, they lived in Melbourne. I believe they travelled with at least 3 children. I cannot locate any record. It was a Peter and Elizabeth (nee Byrne) Murray, children were May, Patrick and ?. He was a seaman and I know he died in a shipwreck on the SS Casino in Port Fairy. Can anyone give me some ideas of where to look for any info? Many thanks.

Hi there, The VICTORIA STATE Library has an excellent 'Ask Us' (or 'Ask a Librarian') service - Query Form on-line. They will check their records for you including eletoral rolls (past & present) newspaper reports etc etc. ('naturalisation' wasn't needed) Valerie (W Aus)

Hi Rhonda, I have found Murray in www.naa.gov.au . I am not sure if this one is right family for you. It was Donald Patrick Murray and his next of kin was Elizabeth Murray (possible his mother?). He was born in 1903 at Belfast, Ireland and lived in Royal Park, Vic. You can click 'search now' then type Donald Patrick Murray in keyboard box. You could order it if it is right one.

Hi Rhonda I don't think anyone except Italians and Germans etc, were naturalised. Until 1949, all Australians were considered British Subjects, but I don't know how the Irish were treated, as British subjects or foreigners. I have found very few British people were ever naturalised, until the rules changed in the second half of the 20th century. You can alo look at incoming immigrants at the Public Records Office Website: http://www(.)access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PROVguide023.jsp Scroll down to Immigration. Several families of Murrays appear listed. You can also look at the Vic BDMS website - you can search the index but its costs to look at the results - or you can ask Cherilyn on this board for a look up - Deaths are available right up to the 1960s and indexes include parents names If you google Port Fairy Casino SHipwreck you will find info on a memorial at Port Fairy.
