Find Ancestors

On 1871 censusI have a Joseph Blaylock aged 10 (presumably born 1861) living at home with father John 33, mother Jane 35 and younger brother William 4 all born Cumberland. I cannot find Joseph on 1881 census at all. Was there a war or anything around this time which would have taken him out of the country or has he died? Up to now I can't find a death. Any help welcome.
