Hi I have the census image and on 1901 census it is very hard to tell if it is an 'a' or 'o' but the 1891 shows as Dorling. the marriage cert is a copy showing Dorling but the birth index for 1913 is clearly typed as Darling. The copy of the birth cert, the mothers maiden name could be Darling but the informant of the birth being the mother looks like Dorling. Very confusing!!

Have you seen the census images or are you going on the transcriptions??As we all know these can often be wrong. How is Minnie described on the census returns??Unmarried, married or widowed? Mary

Have you got an actual copy of the register with their signatures on? I would go by how they sign. There will only be one track....but the names might change. Gwyn

many names changed for one cert/census to the next......you will probably have to go down both lines til you find out which is the right one

I am trying to find my OH family history and have stumbled on the surname. Birth Cert for Mary shows surname as Darling mother Minnie father unknown. Marriage cert for Mary shows Dorling - still no father, witness to marriage as Leonard Dorling. 1901 census shows Minnie Dorling but no Leonard, 1891 census as Darling. Can I be sure and go down the Dorling road or will I going off track. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Jill
