Does anyone know where I would be able to find out about a marriage before 1837. It was between WILLIAM BUNTING and MARTHA BROOM and would have been in Cheadle, Cheshire. I'm unable to get up to Stockport so was wondering if any of that information is online somewhere? Many thanks, Juliana

I can't see the marriage on the BVRI but there are the christenings of the following children of William & Martha Bunting in Stockport, Cheshire: William, 19 Apr.1829 Sarah, 12 Sep.1830 Mary, 3 Aug.1832 Elizabeth, 20 Feb.1839 Robert, 24 Jun.1840 Sarah Ann, 25 Dec.1842

This family on the 1851 census seems to match up with the christenings from the BVRI. The name was transcribed as Banhey but original looks like Bunting. 12 Churchgate, Stockport, Cheshire William Bunting, head, 49, cotton manufacturer employing 10 hands, born Stockport, Cheshire Martha, wife, 49, born Maresdea?, Derbyshire Samuel, son, 15, mill lab. Martha, dau, 14, mill lab. Elizabeth, dau, 13, mill lab. Robert, son, 11, mill lab. William H., son, 4 Sarah A., dau, 9 Children all born Stockport, Cheshire.

If you want to find the marriage record, then there is a decent chance that the christenings referred to above would have been at the same church. Identify that, and then see whether the LDS catalogue includes the parish marriage register for the probable date range of the marriage. If you order the microfilm at your local LDS Family History Centre, you will be able to look at the original marriage register entry. If you are lucky, that might identify at least fathers, but if not, then it will still be useful to have the couple's parish of residence and groom's trade or profession, which is quite likely, even before 1837 (but not much before, generally). The witnesses may also be other family members, and may help you to piece together a family group.

Further to what Titus said, I realized that I should have put the source for the christenings. No church was given but the source was FHL Film 1751721. Margaret

Looking at IGI, which has several of the christenings, the entry with the best referencing (Elizabeth 20-Feb-1839) is taken from Bishop's Transcripts for Stockport Parish Church. The same batch has Hannah Bunting, ch3-Sep-1837, daughter of John Bunting & Mary. There is at least an evens chance (and it is no more than a chance, and might just be coincidence) that John & William are siblings. If you looked for baptisms of William & John in the range of, say, 1790 to 1810 you may find both, with common parents, and you might be on the trail of the next generation, and could start to look for detailed information that could confirm or correct the connection.
