My granda, Joseph Mathew Cobb, was born in Sunderland 1912. He lived at Redhouse Sunderland whilst he was serving in the War. Now, I have a copy of his service book and a telegraph addressed to my nana, when he was injured. He served in the D.L.I from 20 6/40 to 31 12/41 Then the R.A.C from 1 1/42 to 27 10/45 Then the R.S.F from 28 10/ 43 to 4 2/46. I have sent an email to the D.L.I and have written to the M.O.D( a while ago now). Can anyone give me any advise on where to find information , about where and when he served and what he did, and any scrap of information or especially photographs from when he was in the services. If anyone has heard of him through family etc any help much appreciated. Thankyou Karen

Karen It sounds as though you've contacted the right people already! The MOD would have his service records, which they will provide to next of kin for £30 (but they take AGES!). DLI would have details of where the regiment served.

Hi, Is there any army/WW2 site you know of which may have any photos or name seraches which actually give any information out rather than addresses? Regards Karen

Karen I don't think so. You could look at the London Gazette site and put his name in the search, to see if any medals or awards are mentioned.

You will find all the information about applying for WW2 service records here. The reason it can take a long time is because they have to give priority to personnel still serving, also those ex service people in receipt of pensions, Family History is, quite rightly, way down the list of their priorities http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html Jennifer
