I can still remember, as a child, seeing an older relative 'stick his toothbrush up the chimney'. At the time, I thought he must have been a bit mad. I've since discovered that people used soot to clean their teeth. They would have to rinse well afterwards though. M. Steer.

Soot is carbon, so anything which requires carbon can use soot. It was also used as a dye, I believe, as well as a toothpaste, and as one of the main ingredients of 'black lead' polish. OC

Google soot and read Wikipedia. It says soot is used in ink and paint and today is used in laser printers and other uses.. Margaret

Hello Betty, I don't know what they sold soot for in the 1800,s but my father was a chimney sweep in the 1950's and he use to sell his soot to a Market Gardener who used to plough it in his land! I assume it was used maybe to put some sort of nutrient in the soil. Lesley

Betty - found this under old occupations: Blacking Maker - Made boot polish (usually using soot) so maybe your ancestors sold the soot to the people who made the boot polish Jane

I have chimney sweeps in my family in 1861 and 1871 census but some of them are just called soot merchands, did they really sell soot? and if so what for. Betty
